Sport Fishing

The most popular species for sport fishing are walleye, northern pike, lake trout and brook trout.

Under the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement, it is prohibited to fish lake sturgeon, whitefish, sucker (chub), burbot and goldeye recreationally in the James Bay region.

CONDITIONS

In addition to acquiring a fishing licence from the Government of Québec, users must also obtain a daily fishing pass of the Weh-Sees Indohoun (WSI) zone in order to fish in that region. Passes are issued free of charge and can be obtained either at the WSI office, located at the Cree Nation of Nemaska, by fax or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. (48 hours before the fishing trip in these two latter cases).

Fishermen interested in fishing on Nemaska Category I and II Lands, which are included in the WSI zone, must first request authorization from the Cree Nation of Nemaska (819-673-2512) and then get an access pass from the WSI office. Anglers interested in fishing on Waskaganish Category I or II lands need to contact the Cree Nation of Waskaganish (819-895-8650) for authorization.

At the end of their fishing trip, all fishermen must declare their catches (kept, released or consumed on-site) by returning to the WSI office their daily catch report with their access passes. Failure to comply with this requirement constitutes an offence punishable by a fine.

It should be noted that sport fishing is prohibited in certain water bodies by either the Règlement de pêche du Québec [Québec Sport Fishing Regulations], or via the non-issuance of access rights to fish. Sport fishing is prohibited in the area of the rivière à l'Eau Claire [Eau Claire River] in order to protect salmonids in this area. See also the list of water bodies where sport fishing is prohibited at all times and consult the WSI information officer to obtain a daily fishing pass for lakes open to fishing.
